The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has announced a competition to fill a post titled "Traducteur/Traductrice junior anglais-français" (grade T2) at its Headquarters in Brussels. The competition is open to nationals of NATO member states only. The closing date is 20 April 2012.

Among the requirements quoted from the vacancy notice:

Essentiels :

• avoir suivi avec succès une formation en traduction de niveau universitaire reconnue, ou être titulaire d’un diplôme dans une discipline pertinente, délivré par un établissement de valeur reconnue et complété par des capacités en traduction avérées ;
• avoir une très bonne maîtrise du français, sa langue maternelle, et posséder une bonne connaissance de l’anglais (très bonne compréhension et capacité de s’exprimer clairement par écrit et oralement dans cette langue) ;

Souhaitables :

• au moins deux années d’expérience pertinente ;

• A perfect command of French (mother tongue) and an excellent knowledge of English and Spanish. Working knowledge of other IOM/UN official languages is an advantage.
• An advanced university degree from a recognized school of translation, or a four-year first level degree in some other relevant field or an equivalent qualification from a university in which French is the language of instruction.
• At least three years of professional translation experience (or five years of experience for candidates with a first university degree) at the international level. Having passed the United Nations competitive examination is an asset.

Les titulaires seront appelés à effectuer les tâches suivantes :

• Traduire des textes généraux et techniques de l’anglais au français tout en respectant la terminologie établie pour les clients.
• Réviser des textes généraux et techniques traduits de l’anglais au français par les traducteurs internes et pigistes, et en assurer l’uniformité.
• Répondre aux besoins linguistiques ponctuels des clients et des traducteurs.
• Travailler en équipe avec les coordonnateurs pour veiller au respect des échéances et à la qualité du travail.

Exigences

• Baccalauréat en traduction d’un établissement reconnu.
• Expérience d’au moins 5 ans en traduction.
• Souplesse, autonomie et capacité de prioriser les demandes urgentes et de les traiter efficacement.
• Facilité à communiquer dans les deux langues et à travailler en équipe.
• Une connaissance des domaines automobile, financier, agricole ou minier constitue un atout certain, tout comme la maîtrise des outils d’aide à la traduction et des logiciels de mise en page.

To follow up on our message of 15 February 2012, the United Nations Secretariat has today announced that its competitive examination (LCE) for French translators/précis-writers is now open for applications. The closing date is 11 May 2012. The examinations are scheduled for 27 June 2012 at all examination centres around the world (whose locations are yet to be announced).

The United Nations Secretariat has announced its 2012 schedule of competitive examinations for translators, précis-writers, editors, verbatim reporters and interpreters.

In the UN Secretariat, it is mandatory for candidates for such posts to have passed the corresponding UN language competitive examinations (LCEs). The competitions are held every three or four years to draw up rosters of language specialists qualified for initial recruitment at the grade P2 level (or in a few cases at the grade P3 level for those having extensive experience). The UN Secretariat duty stations to which successful candidates may be assigned are Geneva, Nairobi, New York and Vienna, as well as the economic commissions in Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut and Santiago administered by the UN Secretariat.

Having passed one of the UN Secretariat’s competitive examinations is generally not a requirement for recruitment by specialized agencies of the United Nations system (the World Bank, IMF, WHO, ICAO, UPU, ITU, IMO, UNESCO, etc.). Nor is it generally a requirement for recruitment by courts and tribunals administered outside the UN Secretariat (the ICJ, ICTY, ICC, ITLOS, etc.). Those bodies all organize their own examinations as necessary; still, someone who has passed one of the UN Secretariat’s competitive examinations may find it an asset when applying for vacancies in those other bodies.

All applicants must start the LCE process by creating a personal history profile (PHP) using the UN Secretariat’s Inspira on-line application system. Even if examinations listed in the 2012 schedule are not yet open for applications, applicants ought to prepare their PHPs as early as possible so that they will be ready for submission when the application period is announced.
